The Day Sam Cleave Died
It didnât matter what Sam did on November 13th. Every decision he made, every change he enacted, every attempt at saving himself, all led to the same destinationâhis death.
It was already frustrating enough to relive the same hours over and over and over again but what made it worse was the increasingly clear fact that there was nothing that he could actually do to change it in a meaningful way. He always died by the end of the day and then he would wake up by that tree, time and time again.
He was starting to lose track of how many November 13ths he lived through. As they went on, he started to try to become more experimental with the infinite loop of days that he had, hoping that more drastic changes to his day could save his life and snap him free from his imprisonment.
He must have explained the situation to his friends dozens of times in different ways to try to get them to understand what he was going through. Typically, they didnât understand or thought he was losing his mind. In the times when he was able to convince them that he was stuck in a loop, he could see how scared and helpless they were.
No, he needed to find a way out of the loop he was stuck in. He tried all kinds of things, both large and small, to try to change the outcome of the day.
In one of the November 13ths he experienced, he decided to spend the day preparing for his abduction by Julian and the Leper. He managed to arm himself and go exactly where he went the first time, knowing that they would be coming for him. Heâd stop them before they had a chance. Surely, that would be enough to change the future. His attempt to kill the Leper before he could abduct him turned out to be a poor decision that ended with Sam getting killed by a policemanâs bullet, as they thought that he was just some murderer threatening people in the street. That was a strange November 13th, but it was one that would stick out among the dozen others that he kept going through.
It wasnât stranger than his latest venture through those twenty-four hoursâthough heâd never survived the entirety of the twenty-fourâwhen he let the day progress normally all the way up until he was captured by Julian. He let himself go through the day, just to see if there was something that he could change then that would fix everything else.
It was still strange to know that he was looking right at his murderer. He still vividly remembered Julian stabbing him in the chest and dragging that blade across his body, inflicting a wound that Sam wouldnât surviveâand yet, now he apparently had a chance to change all of that, although so far, things had been going almost exactly as they had the first time. He had been able to make a few small changes but those little ripples in time always seemed to correct themselves.
